MOSCOW, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russia's Unified Energy System has set a historic high in power consumption at 177.5 GW, the Russian Power System Operator said Monday.

According to the operator, electricity consumption on Jan. 26 exceeded by 3.7 GW the previous all-time record, which was set on Dec. 11, 2023.

Record-high power demand was also reported across several regions the same day, including Moscow and the Moscow region, as well as the Republic of Tatarstan and Voronezh region.

The surge in electricity use comes as much of Russia is gripped by unseasonably low temperatures. Moscow recorded its coldest night of the winter so far on Sunday, with temperatures plummeting to minus 18.5 degrees Celsius, said Mikhail Leus, a leading specialist at the Phobos Weather Center, on Telegram. ■
